Birds heard on the farm
We keep a small bird recorder out on the farm that picks out the songs and calls of the birds around us and identifies them. This page shows the most recent birds we have heard.
Loading today's detections.
Who is out there
The farm sits on nine acres of pasture in Ghent, Columbia County, bordered by hedgerow and mixed woodland. Field birds and woodland birds both pass through, and the ones that live in neither still cross the property.
Day and night
The system runs overnight. Great Horned and Barred Owls call in the 300 to 600 Hz range, well below most songbirds, and the same pipeline picks them up.
How it works
The identifying is done right here on the farm by BirdNET, free software from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. It only posts birds it is confident about, and we check each new species ourselves before it shows up here.
Everything heard here
Birds detected on the farm, since the system was installed on August 7, 2026. First and last detection dates are the most reliable output here, and they get more meaningful with every additional year.

Come and hear it in person.
Farm visits are by appointment only. Call or text and we will find a morning.
