About the farm
Nine acres in Ghent, New York.
We are a small homestead on nine acres in the Hudson Valley, in Ghent, Columbia County. Everything here is worked by hand, which puts a natural ceiling on how much we take on and a floor under how well we do it.
We started in 2018 with fifty laying hens. In early 2023 we began raising and breeding KuneKune pigs, which have since become the centre of the farm. We raise and process our own meat chickens, and a young fruit orchard is coming into bearing.
Pasture, in rotation
Our pigs are rotationally grazed and have never stepped on concrete. We move them before a paddock is spent, which keeps the grass growing back stronger, breaks the parasite cycle without medication, and lets the animals do the tilling and fertilizing themselves. The hens follow behind them across the same ground.
Feed we can trace
In winter, when the pasture stops giving, we supplement with certified organic, soy-free feed from Stone House Grain in Hudson, New York. They grow their own grain, which means we can point at the field our feed came out of. That matters more to us than any label.
The hoop house
A thirty by ninety six foot tunnel now in service. It extends the growing season at both ends and gives the animals dry ground and shade when the weather turns, which on this property it reliably does.
Why KuneKunes
They are a grazing breed, small, slow growing, and genuinely docile, which makes them manageable on a property this size and safe around visitors. They finish on grass. For a farm that wanted pigs without wanting a feedlot, they were the obvious answer.
